Passion for Style, Design: Vintage & Retro Collecting
We’ve
all seen or heard about people who take their beloved finds or family
heirlooms to a gathering of the wonderful PBS series Antiques
Roadshow and unexpectedly learn their collectible
is indeed worth more than they ever imagined!
Some collectors have discovered that an obscure painting, an old
vase, print, baseball card, a piece of unusual glassware or a toy
is worth thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of dollars.
That is truly a bit of icing on the cake, but it’s not really
the primary reason for becoming a collector. If you really want
to do it, keep in mind the reason most collectors become avid, even
professional collectors (and the key to being a highly successful
collector) is having a love of the hunt and a special delight in
the object itself.
Certainly there are those who trek to Antiques Roadshow
who are disappointed to find out they have something that is not
quite so old or valuable or even authentic, but many people are
simply curious, as well as a little bit hopeful. So if the item
is beloved and cherished, has a bit of family history attached to
it, why should it matter what dollar value is pronounced by others?
And yet, what usually starts as a passion can indeed become a worthwhile
financial investment with increased value as others become more
informed about the special qualities of vintage and retro objects
which are no longer made and which become more scarce with time.
The most important point to remember about collecting is to search
for those items you really enjoy having around you; things you enjoy
looking at and looking for. Why collect something if you don’t
have a true sense of passion and appreciation for what you spend
your precious time and money on?
So remember: first, passion and appreciation, if not downright love
and affection. Then you can begin to learn about what has value
now and more likely, what may gain value in the future.
